Reviews & Testimonials of Ruaha River Lodge

"We'll remember this place for a very long time"

Books go unread, crossroads & sudoko forgotten-just take your binoculars, camera and a drink, sit on your terrace and watch an endless procession of wildlife come down to the river to drink and, in the case of elephants, muck about. We stayed in riverside banda 4 and with banda 3 shared our own private hippo show. This place is just magical and we can't recommend it highly enough. The staff are friendly and efficient; the food, though not high cuisine, is tasty and plentiful; and the rooms clean, comfy and a wonderful size. Loved it.

"Stunning Position"

Spent 3 nights here on what was a holiday of a lifetime. This is exceptional accommodation. From the point of being met at the airstrip to being handed over to the pilot of our small plane to take us on the next leg of our journey we were treated like royalty. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff all of whom were charming, friendly and courteous. Mary (and Metti ?) met us on arrival and informed us of how things worked. They'd even kept us some lunch back even though we were two hours late for it.
The bandas are enormous (bigger than the downstairs of our home in the UK) and well appointed and spotlessly clean. We had one right on the river and spent a number of evenings watching our own personal safari play out in front of us as a number of animals, including hippos, elephant and warthogs came down to the river to take on water. This was indicative of the place which is right in the thick of things in terms of wildlife - baboons on the roof, an elephant waking us up in the night tearing away at a tree right outside our banda, that sort of thing.
The lodge even runs a free laundry service - just put your dirty clothes out in the morning and the re-appear nice and clean in the evening.
The safaris were excellent - we saw 4 of the big 5 (only lacking rhinos but I'm reliably informed that to see these rare beasts you really need to go somewhere like Zambia) and all the other creatures one would expect (including a jackal). I can't understand why another reviewer seemed concerned with the use of radio in tracking the wildlife - this led to us seeing (and getting up real close - I'm talking within 10 feet here) a pride of lions and that most shy of beasts the leopard. You have a choice of safaris - morning, late afternoon or all day, and we went either on our own or with just two other people. In effect the lodge fitted around our wishes. Ruaha is a great place to go - there are so many animals and so few people. We met up with a French couple who had been to the more famous parks in the north - the Serengeti etc - and according to them it sounded like the M25 at rush hour.
On the downside there is always the danger that you may end up in one of the bandas in the hill away from the river. My wife and I had a walk up to see the view, which was stunning, but I would have felt a little out of it if we had been accommodated there. Also the food was not always top notch. Some of the main courses of the evening meals were more cafe than restaurant.
There is also the electricity situation. The generator came on for a couple of hours in the morning for the plugs - but none of these could take a hair dryer much to the consternation of my wife - and in the evening until 10.30 pm which meant lights out at that time (bit like boarding school). They also ran the hot water via solar power which, like my experience of this power system the world over, meant luke warm water at best and cold showers in the morning.
But the latter are just minor quibbles - one has to accept that this is in a national park in the middle of Africa and not Claridges in London.
All in all I would thoroughly recommend this lodge and this part of Tanzania.
